NOVEMBER RECIPE: Fortune Telling Crowdie

2 heaped teaspoons oatmeal, light toasted
1/2 pint heavy cream, lightly whipped
1 oz / 25g sugar, to taste
1 tablespoon rum (optional)

Combine the oatmeal with the whipped cream and stir to taste. Add the rum and chill slightly.

Serve cold.

Many years ago small charms or coins would be stirred into this mixture just before serving. Each guest was asked to take a spoonful in turn until they brought out a charm! A coin for wealth, A ring for marriage, A button for a batchelor, A thimble for a spinster!
