Welcome to Grandma Maude's Page

Grandma Maude

Maude was my grandmother, born into the late 19th century, she lived well into the 20th century. She was one of the most amazing women I have every had the privilege to know. You can follow her real life adventures through my quarterly newsletter, the Tea Break news.

Learn what it was like to be a newly married bride in Victorian society, the restrictions, protocol and responsibilities were many. So many tea parties to attend!

Maude had met and fallen in love with Ernest Oliver Seale, when returning from a voyage to Australia aboard the MS Arcadia. They were married in 1897, setting up home in the 'new' town of Ventor, on the Isle of Wight, in England. With her husband at sea for many long months, Maude decided to open a small hat shop catering to the wealthy tourists that were coming in droves to take in the sea breezes of the area. This action amused her husband and infuriated her mother.

In the corner of her hat shop, Maude set up a small table and a chair or two where her customers could have a cup of tea and a scone.
It is this very scone recipe that Mary Elizabeth uses today to make her scones, which are now available for all to enjoy.

So why not subscribe to the Tea Break news today, put your feet up and enjoy Mary Elizabeth's wonderful scones, together with a cup of one of Mary Elizabeth's speciality teas.
